Developers behind a new hostel on Canal Street gathered yesterday for the ground breaking of the new Hostelling International USA at 1028 Canal St.

Plans filed earlier this year include 24 private guest rooms, 122 dorm-style beds, and  a new fourth floor rooftop addition, and a lobby, cafe, and offices.

The project involves an extensive renovation of the four-story building, which the developers are renting from the family that owns Fischer’s Jewelry.

This is the same site that caught fire in 2016, and also served as the old Pickwick Social Club.

Hosteling International USA operates more than 50 hostels in cities nationwide.  The New Orleans location will employ 32 people, and plans to open in fall 2018.
