The Jung Hotel, once the largest and grandest hotel in the Southern United States, is undergoing a massive transformational redevelopment.

The Canal Street property will consist of residential apartments, an extended stay hotel, ground floor commercial space, and a large parking garage. Its grand opening is planned to coincide with the opening of the new University Medical Center and the Veterans Affairs Hospital of New Orleans.

Plans were filed with the city in January for a revamp of the historic Jung Hotel at 1500 Canal Street.

Heres a current view of the hotel today.

The Jung Hotel first opened its doors in 1907.  In 1925, another section was added and, in the 1960’s, still another.  At one time, it was labeled as the largest convention hotel in the South.  It was called the Jung for more than 75 years and, afterward, it was known as the Clarion, Raddison and Park Plaza.  It was heavily damaged in the great federal flood of 2005.

As for the redevelompent, the project is slated to have 16 studio units, 196 1-Bedroom Units, 116 2-Bedroom Units, along with 124 extended stay hotel rooms and 54k of retail space on the ground. The rear of the building on the corner of Villere and and Cleveland will be torn down and rebuilt as a 7 story parking garage with ground level retail.

Architect on the project is John Williams.

The Mcdonnel Group is the contractor.

Developer Joe Jaeger is the owner.
