When the Napoleon Avenue drainage canal construction is finished, which is expected to be at the end of this year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to build a new walking path down the middle of the neutral ground. The Corps also plans on making the neutral ground narrower to make room for bike lanes on the street.

The Corps’ plans were presented at an open house two weeks ago.  Some other ideas for the plans include “natural” tree planting, favoring palm trees and meadows to help soak up rainwater. The Corps says the art installation project is still a possibility, but is dependent on funding.

The Uptown Messenger reported that attendees at the open house were surprised and not pleased with the plan to narrow the walkway for the wider bike lanes.

You can read more about the construction project from the Sewage and Board here.
