Ride New Orleans, the advocacy organization that seeks to promote safe, convenient and affordable transportation options for residents, has announced that they have secured $500,000 in funding for a new transit “hub” in the CBD.

Last week,Ride New Orleans hosted a day of action in support of the CBD transit hub, placing 200 chairs along Elk Place in the CBD, and calling for investment in the heart of the city’s transit system with the release of the report: “Smart Transit for a Strong Economy: Why New Orleans Should Invest in a CBD Transit Hub.

During the initiative, Justin Augustine, Vice President of Veolia Transportation Services Inc. in service to the Regional Transit Authority (RTA), committed $16,000 to provide immediate relief for transferring riders in the form of new benches and shelters in the next 120 days.

Following the action day, on Tuesday, April 22, the RTA Board voted to approve $500,000 for a CBD Transit Hub alternatives analysis in 2015.   While many details need to be ironed out, the quick pace of action by the RTA and the city should be applauded.

Ride New Orleans is an advocacy organization that envisions a world class, multi-modal transportation system that promotes a vibrant, healthy and sustainable New Orleans region.  Among other things, they work to advance policies in a variety of different areas, including streetcars, transfer solutions, land use, ferries, bridges, intercity transit, and buses.
