The City Park Conservancy in New Orleans has secured a $2 million donation from the Samuel Barton Stewart III Memorial Foundation. This funding will aid the renovation of the park’s historic 1935 maintenance corral into the new S. Barton Stewart III Center. With this contribution, the City Park 2050 initiative pivots towards active investment in up to 900 acres of underdeveloped land on the park’s north side.

The announcement was made on March 3, 2026, marking a notable shift from foundational repairs to unlocking the potential of the park’s north side. Planned developments include trails, a boathouse, and a reimagined Wisner Tract, signaling the onset of substantial public-space improvements that could impact nearby property values and stimulate construction activity.

City Park leaders recently celebrated the completion of six months of repair work and announced their vision for the north side’s transformation at the Lark in the Park event on March 13, 2026. This milestone event also served to highlight the broader goals of the City Park 2050 initiative.

The significant donation from the Stewart Foundation is part of a collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders. The initiative also receives backing from the Greater New Orleans Foundation and the State of Louisiana, with key figures such as Rebecca Dietz, Kurt Garcia, and Andy Kopplin playing pivotal roles. The momentum from these partnerships suggests a dynamic period ahead for city park planning and development.

The renovation of the S. Barton Stewart III Center is expected to be completed by fall 2027. With City Park encompassing roughly 1,300 acres, the focus on expanding and enhancing the undeveloped north side presents opportunities for local contractors and design firms as project procurement accelerates.
