Southern Energy Renewables has announced plans for a $1.4 billion biomass-to-fuel facility in St. Charles Parish. This major industrial investment aims to add approximately 120 direct jobs and a total of 514 jobs, including indirect ones, while utilizing regional wood-waste feedstock. The project is set to enhance lower-carbon fuel production along the Mississippi River industrial corridor.

CityBusiness recently confirmed Southern Energy Renewables’ formal plan for the facility, detailing the expected job counts, incentives, and projected timelines. Construction is anticipated to start in late 2027, with commercial operations expected by the end of 2029. This development represents a significant capital investment in the region.

The facility will be strategically located near major logistics infrastructure along the Mississippi River, tapping into the regional hydrogen supply. Southern Energy Renewables, led by CEO Jay Patel, is currently preparing for a proposed merger with DevvStream. St. Charles Parish President Matthew Jewell has also been quoted regarding the project.

The state is supporting this development through an incentive package, which includes workforce training via LED FastStart, a $1 million performance-based infrastructure grant, and participation in the Industrial Tax Exemption Program. These incentives highlight the project’s local economic and workforce impact.

As St. Charles Parish readies for site development, the project symbolizes a broader market shift towards low-carbon fuels and industrial decarbonization. This shift is resulting in increased large-scale commercial real estate activity and public incentivization across the region.
