The Audubon Nature Institute has unveiled the first major phase of Goldring Woldenberg Riverfront Park at Governor Nicholls Wharf, marking a significant redevelopment move on the New Orleans riverfront. The $30 million project offers a new public space that enhances river access and is set to bolster the city’s downtown appeal.
This recently completed phase transforms the old Governor Nicholls wharf into a landscaped park spanning roughly six acres. The area now includes playgrounds, river-view seating, and plazas, facilitating a new amenity for both locals and visitors. This enhancement is part of an expansive 2.25-mile corridor connecting Spanish Plaza to Crescent Park, creating a continuous riverfront experience.
The French Quarter Festival will expand its activities into this new park space during its event from April 16-19, 2026. Festival organizers have confirmed that the new park will support enhanced programming and provide additional space for attendees, signaling increased cultural engagement along the riverfront.
Audubon Nature Institute spearheaded this redevelopment, with significant contributions from design firms EskewDumezRipple and Hargreaves Jones. Philanthropic support from the Goldring family and Woldenberg Foundations played a crucial role, reflecting a successful model of private-nonprofit collaboration in urban placemaking.
The completion of this phase is expected to impact adjacent property values and drive foot traffic to the downtown area. It provides a case study in how philanthropy and private leadership can stimulate urban revitalization and improve public spaces.
