Hotel Hope, in partnership with People’s Housing+, commenced construction on May 13, 2026, for the Hope Family Housing pilot at 3931 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. This initiative aims to introduce a new model for nonprofit-led affordable housing in New Orleans by utilizing the city’s Small Multi-Family Affordable zoning and adopting FORTIFIED Gold construction standards.

This pilot project, housed adjacent to Hotel Hope’s existing campus, is set to develop two duplexes offering four rental units tailored for single-parent families and seniors aged 55 and over. The construction budget for this initial phase is approximately $640,000, with work expected to begin in summer 2026 and conclude in about six months.

The project not only seeks to provide permanent, affordable housing but also emphasizes resilience through the FORTIFIED Gold standards, integrating features such as impact windows and reinforced roofs. This design approach aims to mitigate long-term storm damage and maintenance costs, which is significant for insurers and investors interested in New Orleans’ housing resilience.

Key participants include Hotel Hope as the sponsor and operator, with People’s Housing+ serving as the development partner and construction manager. Early funding comes from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Sisters of the Presentation, and the Ascension Foundation. Mayor Helena Moreno was present to provide remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony.

As part of a larger vision, the partners plan to expand the Hope Family Housing initiative to 20 duplexes, totaling 40 units, over the next five years. This scalable model presents an interesting template for affordable housing development, making the pilot a focal point for community land trusts and mission-driven development strategies in the city.
