New Orleans Career Center (NOCC) trainees have finished construction of a 288-square-foot tiny house, formally handing over the keys to Thrive New Orleans on June 11, 2026. This marks the completion of a privately led workforce-training project, designed to address skilled labor shortages and provide transitional housing.

The tiny house, featuring one bedroom, a closet, a bathroom with a shower, and a compact kitchen/living area, was assembled over nine months at NOCC’s courtyard. It will be relocated to Thrive New Orleans’ Bywater property, where Thrive participants will handle the final interior additions, making it ready for transitional housing.

This project involved key collaboration among NOCC, Thrive New Orleans, architect Alex Sixt-Hresko from SCNZ Architects, and materials donor The Palmisano Foundation. NOCC’s trainees participated in the Building Trades program, gaining valuable hands-on experience while constructing the dwelling.

The initiative, supported by a materials donation from The Palmisano Foundation, showcased a replicable model for affordable housing solutions in urban areas facing limited space. It also highlighted the potential for public-private partnerships to facilitate workforce development and community support.

Looking forward, the house will soon be moved to its final location in Bywater, where further work including cabinets, appliances, plumbing, and painting will be completed. While a specific date for these tasks was not confirmed, the project signals broader regional demand for such housing solutions and skilled construction labor.

The partnership between NOCC and Thrive New Orleans exemplifies a strategic approach to tackling housing and employment challenges, providing a model that could be scaled across other neighborhoods in New Orleans.
