CarMax, the online car retailer, has broken ground on a new $25 million location in Kenner. The retailer has a large pile of dirt – “surcharge fill” – currently at the site as it readies for construction.
The site, on 32nd Street near The Esplanade mall, will include a 523 car lot display and offices. The store will employe more than 150 people once it opens.
The first phase of the project includes a 44,763-square-foot building to house the car servicing garage, sales offices, a private car wash, and a sales lot for 342 cars.
The second phase includes an additional 13,000 square foot building to expand services and will involve hiring more folks.
CarMax is the United States’ largest used-car retailer and a Fortune 500 company. The first CarMax location opened in September 1993. As of March 2017, the company had 173 locations.
