Manning Family Children’s will significantly enhance its neonatal care services by constructing a new 60-bed Level 4 NICU at its main campus in New Orleans. The expansion will increase the hospital’s capacity from 35 beds, with construction expected to break ground this spring and the facility to be operational in 2027.
The details of the expansion, confirmed in recent announcements, involve utilizing framed shell space on the hospital’s fourth-floor medical tower. This development will triple the NICU’s current square footage, offering more specialized clinical space and academic facilities. Designed by Kennedy Kraft Architects and constructed by Woodward Design/Build, this project will also support a capital campaign already underway.
With the hospital serving as a 263-bed pediatric medical center for the Gulf South, this expansion will address the growing demand for critical neonatal care. In 2025 alone, Manning Family handled 272 critically ill baby transfers, highlighting the necessity for increased NICU capacity. The project also proposes significant regional surge capacity improvements.
Construction is set to begin this spring and aims for completion by 2027. As the hospital undertakes this healthcare real estate investment, it’s expected to provide substantial commercial construction opportunities in the region, from specialty contracts to medical equipment procurement.
The NICU expansion underscores Manning Family Children’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and outcomes in the Gulf South. The project’s impact extends beyond capacity improvements, involving strategic recruitment of specialized clinical staff and adjustments in hospital operations and services.
