The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra broke ground this morning on the site for its future $8 million New Orleans Jazz Market in Central City.    The Jazz resource and community center will occupy the former Gators retails location at 1436 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd, the corner of Oretha Castle Haley and Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards.

The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra purchased the property last year for $600,000.  The building has 11,000+ square feet, and the venue will allow for 600 seats.

Financing from the project comes from theater infrastructure credits, historic tax credits,  federal New Market Tax Credits, and a $6000,000 grant from the state.

The new center’s mission is to provide an educational resource center for inspiring musicians as well as a way to honor jazz greats.

Until now, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra has leased office space.  The new project will give NOJO a central headquarters for its musicians, staff and stakeholders.

Kronberg Wall Architects of Atlanta designed the space and Landis Construction is the GC.
