The Carver Theater developers have announced that the theater will open April 30.
The theater at 2101 Orleans Ave. suffered major damage in 2005 as a result of the damage caused by the failures of the federal levees after Hurricane Katrina.
Dr. Eugene Oppman has been working for years on an $8 million restoration of the building. Once open, the theater will produce top notch entertainment events. With it’s primary focus on Jazz, big band ensembles and off-Broadway shows, it will be a welcomed entity in the community of Treme known for it’s rich cultural history and musical roots. Additionally, the state-of-the-art facility will be equipped to host various other events such as meetings, conventions and tradeshows.
The Carver was built 63 years ago for African Americans in the days of segregation, but it’s been 30 years since some of the giants of the music industry performed at the Carver theatre.
