Wischermann Partners Inc. and Jayshree Hospitality LLC, the co-developers of the proposed 21-story, 373-room hotel at the corner of Canal and Tchoupitoulas streets, have withdrawn their plans.
The proposal for the construction of the hotel involved the demolition of four historic buildings. The HDLC unanimously rejected their demolition request back in March, and the council had been scheduled to decide Thursday on appeal whether to overturn the HDLC’s decision.
The developers pulled the proposal at the request of Councilwoman Latoya Cantrell, whose district includes the hotel site.
There was a major battle gearing up as the plan faced very strong opposition from preservations. For the most part, everyone seemed to be in favor of the size and scope of the project, they just didn’t want the historic buildings to be demolished.
The $120 million hotel would have featured two Marriott-branded hotels (a Residence Inn and a Springhill Suites), and included a 373-key facility, a 168-space parking garage would have occupied several of the building’s lower levels.
Cantrell said she plans to work with the developers to come up with a plan that incorporates the historic buildings and is more palatable for the community.
