A $1.2 million construction permit was issued Nov. 20 for the Woodmere Community Center in Harvey on Edgewood Street at Woodmere Park, which will serve a community of more than 12,000 residents.

Three fourths of the financing came from the state with the rest from Jefferson Parish.

The community center features a 3,400-square foot building and 1,400-square-feet of outdoor space.

The building features a 1,000-square-foot assembly hall and a 375-square-foot conference room. There will be one office, a covered porch overlooking the park, a kitchen and a lobby/reception area.

J.A. “Jack” Julius Jr. Inc. is the General Contractor and Meyer Engineers of Metairie is the architect.

The Jefferson Parish Community Action Program will operate the facility. Director Jedidiah Jackson said the center will be a hub for community events and classes, and it will also be used for Woodmere Civic Association and other neighborhood group meetings that are currently held at a former Winn-Dixie supermarket site nearby.
