The National WWII Museum will officially break ground on The Higgins Hotel & Conference Center on Friday, Dec. 8 at 10 a.m. at the corner of Andrew Higgins Drive and Magazine Street.

The Museum has seen tremendous growth over the years, and it drives nearly 600,000 tourist visits annually.  Given the increase in national visitation and distinction, the Museum’s board of trustees decided to build a $66 million flagship hotel.

Plans call for building a 234-room hotel to open in 2019.  The hotel will feature a 22,000 square foot conference center, a fitness center, business center, a restaurant and bar, rooftop and a swimming pool.  It will be managed by Chicago-based Hostmark Hospitality Group, and is being designed by Florida-based Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe 7 Associates Inc. New Orleans-based Palmisano Contractors as the general contractor.

The WWII Museum has been expanding at a nice clip recently, with recent additions including a monstrous parking garage next to the hotel site, the construction of the $10 million Canopy of Peace, the construction of two new buildings on Magazine Street, and construction of the $3 million pedestrian bridge over St. Joseph Street.
