LCMC Health has committed $14 million to expand and consolidate its women’s and newborn services at Lakeside Hospital in Metairie. This investment, announced within the last week, signals a major consolidation of services from East Jefferson General Hospital to Lakeside, with the goal to complete the transition by 2027.
The expansion will modernize and centralize several essential facilities, featuring 10 labor and delivery suites, 30 postpartum rooms, and 3 operating rooms. Additionally, the project includes a 26-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which will be staffed by Manning Family Children’s Hospital neonatologists, alongside a six-bed adult ICU and five new clinic spaces to accommodate physician relocations.
LCMC Health, in collaboration with Tulane University School of Medicine and LSU Health New Orleans, plans to make Lakeside a central hub for women’s and newborn care in Jefferson Parish. The plan is expected to shift patient volumes and referral patterns across the region, impacting local medical office leasing and ambulatory care real estate.
The project’s scope necessitates specialized contractors for high-spec clinical spaces such as the NICU, highlighting the need for equipment with long lead times and upgrades compliant with specific codes. This poses opportunities for construction firms and investors monitoring healthcare capital expenditure in the New Orleans metro area.
LCMC aims to have the enhanced facilities fully operational by 2027, affecting not only healthcare provision but also the surrounding area’s real estate dynamics, particularly regarding hospital-adjacent development needs such as parking and infrastructure accommodations. This strategic enhancement underscores LCMC Health’s commitment to advancing medical care in the region.
