The City of New Orleans and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) have announced the substantial completion of a $4.7 million LED lighting upgrade at the I-10/I-610 interchange. This project involved installing 154 new fixtures aimed at enhancing nighttime visibility and safety, as well as improving maintenance resiliency along a corridor that handles roughly 91,000 vehicles daily.

On March 11, 2026, New Orleans CityBusiness reported that the upgrade reached substantial completion. This includes specific installation counts and funding sources, with the City slated to assume long-term ownership and maintenance of the lighting system.

The project located in eastern New Orleans saw significant involvement from the City, DOTD, and officials such as Mayor Helena Moreno, DOTD district engineer Scott Boyle, and City Council member Oliver Thomas. It involved installing a combination of standard, high-mast, and underpass fixtures across the interchange corridor.

Funded mainly through the federal National Highway Performance Program, with state and local partnerships, DOTD managed both the design and construction. The project includes 37 standard poles hosting 53 lights, 20 high-mast poles supporting 82 lights, and 19 lights under overpasses.

While substantial project completion is confirmed, exact handover or maintenance start dates remain unannounced. The completion represents an essential step for infrastructure improvements that could influence safety, drainage, and property values in adjacent areas.

This initiative highlights coordination between DOTD and the City, demonstrating available federal resources for infrastructure priorities. It also shows efforts to reduce vulnerability to storm damage with more resilient lighting technology, providing potential energy savings.
