New flood insurance maps for New Orleans were made final earlier this year, and those changes have resulted in lower flood insurance premiums for thousands of owners throughout New Orleans. The big kicker was that FEMA re-designated many properties from the Special Flood Hazard Areas, which require flood insurance, to other designations, which do not.
The changes are based on “significant improvements in drainage and flood protection” which resulted in “more than 53 percent of all properties in New Orleans” being removed from the Special Flood Hazard Areas (‘A’ zones), according to a press release from Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s office.
But, who will this really impact? Is your property in a new zone, or did it stay the same.
