The owner of Tipitina’s and his development partner on other projects have plans to develop a huge entertainment complex at the old Bally’s riverboat casino landing in New Orleans East.
Tipitinas owner Roland von Kurnatowski and his partner Dr. Eric George are also the pair of developers behind the renovation and redevelopment of the Orpheum Theater, which they purchased last year for $1.5 million and are undertaking a $13 million renovation.
Their proposal for the massive lakefront property, to be named ‘Tipitina’s Festival Park’, would include:
-
An outdoor amphitheater with a 5,000 capacity.
-
A lazy river and splash park.
-
Water slides and zip lines.
-
A two-story, covered boardwalk with shops.
-
The conversion of the old riverboat terminal into an open-air market.
The entire property has sat vacant and unused since Katrina. The State returned the property to local control in 2010 with the creation of the Orleans Parish Non-Flood Protection Asset Management Board. In 2014, the authority issued an RFP to solicit proposals from private developers.
von Kurnatowski and George’s proposal was the only one submitted.
A re-development of the site would be a huge boost for the city of New Orleans, for both the local music scene, and national tourism to the area.
But the developers say they haven’t even started looking at financing yet, so looks like we have a long way t0 go.
What do you want to see at the site?
