The Port of New Orleans has officially declared May 2026 as Maritime Month, featuring a month-long series of events aimed at boosting tourism and highlighting river commerce. The centerpiece of the festivities is New Orleans being the first U.S. stop for the international SAIL 250 tall-ship flotilla, scheduled to take place from May 28 to June 1, 2026.

From May 1 through 31, Port NOLA’s Maritime Month will include various activities designed to increase awareness of the port’s role as a commercial gateway. Events will align with National Maritime Day on May 22, which will see live broadcast coverage, highlighting the port’s facilities and operations. The month-long celebration is expected to drive tourism, benefiting local hospitality, retail, and food and beverage sectors.

Key partners in the month include New Orleans & Company, alongside Port NOLA’s President and CEO, Beth Branch, who are playing instrumental roles in organizing the event. The city anticipates a significant influx of visitors, which should provide a boost to hotel occupancy and restaurant revenues, particularly in the Central Business District and French Quarter.

The SAIL 250 tall ships arriving on the Mississippi River promise to be a major attraction, drawing both locals and tourists to the waterfront. This increased visibility on the working river will be beneficial for developers and businesses considering waterfront investments.

Looking ahead, the programming and media coverage will serve as a platform for cruise lines, tour operators, and hospitality providers to capitalize on the enhanced foot traffic. The events are poised to elevate the city’s profile as a significant maritime hub, while simultaneously providing economic benefits to the local community.
