Practis, a local architecture firm, has completed the transformation of the Harry Tompson Center at 1803 Gravier Street in downtown New Orleans. The $3.6 million capital campaign turned a long-standing 2007-era trailer campus into a permanent 16,839 square-foot facility.
The multi-phase project, verified in a recent Biz New Orleans article, was led by Practis with executive input from Emily Bussen Wain of the Harry Tompson Center. Construction was carried out in two phases by local contractors Gibbs Construction and Grant Ethridge Construction.
The rebuild enhances the site’s capacity to serve up to 200 guests daily and includes permanent offices, a medical bay, showers, phone booths, counseling rooms, and laundry facilities. This marks a significant upgrade from the previous temporary structures, adapting the space for expanded community services.
Practis’s involvement in this private-sector project illustrates a successful use of capital funding for property transformation in the downtown area. The project suggests potential opportunities for future local contracting, maintenance projects, and possible shifts in block-level real estate dynamics.
While the article provides comprehensive details about the project’s completion, additional aspects such as specific donors for the capital campaign and long-term property management plans were not disclosed. These elements could provide further insights into the financing mechanisms and operational strategies associated with the redevelopment.
