150+ Bed ‘Hostelling International’ Planned For Canal Street

A developer recently filed with the city to build a new hostel on Canal Street, at the edge of the French Quarter.

The plans filed show the renovation of an existing three story building, including a bridge across an alley to the adjacent building, and construction of a new fourth floor rooftop addition at 1028-1030, and 1036 Canal Street.  This is the same site that burned last year in a 6 alarm fire.

Plans filed by Coleman Partners Architects, LLC for the Historic District Landmark’s Commission (HDLC) Architectural Review Committee indicate that the space would have a large ground floor lobby, cafe, offices, storage areas, and meetings rooms.

The hostel would feature at least 43 rooms and 148 beds, and likely more including the penthouse floor addition.

The building is currently owned by EJW Enterprises, whose principal is Gene Fischer of Fischer Jewlers. No word yet on who, exactly, the tenant is. In the meantime, check out the renderings below.
