After the City Planning Commission unanimously rejected a controversial proposal for an upscale hostel in Bywater in March, they approved developer Ted Kelso’s plans for a hostel by a 6-1 vote yesterday, May 19, 2016.
Kelso went back to the drawing board after March’s meeting, hired a new design firm, Studio WTA, and scaled back his plans from 48,000 square feet to 32,000 square feet.
The result is a smaller $16 million development that still features 185 beds, shared and private rooms, a public pool and courtyard, laundry, coffee shop, community center, restaurant and rooftop bar at 4019 Chartres St. Jason Williams cast the sole vote against the project.
Kelso expects to draw 75% of his millennial travelers from abroad with rooms rates between $50 and $140 per night.
Stateside’s approval is the latest in new developments coming to the Bywater. Other projects include MK Red’s 32Hundred luxury condo project next to Crescent Park, Sean Cummings’ Via Latrobe, and new coworking space The Warehouse.
