CVS Pharmacy will open a new 13,225 square foot facility in the Lower 9th Ward today.
The new building at 5000 N. Claiborne Ave. is the first national retailer to open in the Lower 9 since Katrina. The company broke ground on the building in August 2015. The developer, First Hartford Corp., received tax breaks from the city’s Industrial Development Board in the form of a Payment in Lieu of Taxes back in 2015.
The new store will employ 20 people and takes up the entire city block.
Mike Sherman, a consultant who represents the developer and has worked on other CVS developments in the city, said the store would expand offerings not typically found in other CVS locations. He said certain groceries would be included as part of a broad list of sales items.
Linfield, Hunter & Junius, Inc. were the architects and engineers on the project.
