SBP (formerly the St. Bernard Project) held a ground breaking two weeks ago on their new affordable housing development at Broad Street and Orleans Avenue.
The new, nearly $10 million project, will include 50 apartments, a community room, and wellness center in a three story building. The building will also include 450 rooftop solar panels and energy storing batteries, with goal to create a “net zero” property, that is, all electricity it uses will be generated on-site by renewable sources. Entergy donated the panels at a cost of $1.2 million.
The new projected, dubbed The St. Peter, will have 23 one bedrooms and 27 two-bedrooms in over 45,000 square feet right behind and adjacent to The Broad Theater and the current SBP Headquarters. Half of the units will be reserved for veterans.
Eskew+Dumez+Ripple is the architect of record and Broadmoor LLC is the general contractor.
The project is being financed by 9 percent Low-Income Housing Tax Credits from theLouisiana Housing Corporation and a loan from Metairie-Home Bank.
