Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Service Exceeds Projections, Sparks $200M in Upgrades

Amtrak’s Mardi Gras line from New Orleans to Mobile has surpassed its first-year ridership goal within just six months of operation. The New Orleans–Mobile service carried over 80,000 riders, exceeding the initial forecast of 76,000 for the entire year. These promising figures have justified a significant investment of more than $200 million in both federal and state funds aimed at upgrading tracks on Norfolk Southern and CSX.

Announced at a legislative hearing earlier this month, the funding is earmarked for track enhancements designed to improve fluidity, reduce travel times, and enhance safety along the Gulf Coast corridor. Upgrades will include the addition of longer sidings and faster turnouts to accommodate increased passenger volumes. This significant investment is spread over the next three to four years.

The Mardi Gras service, with its twice-daily schedule, has seen an average of approximately 408 riders each day, with ticket prices ranging around $30 for coach and about $70 for business class. The route not only connects major cities such as New Orleans, Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Mobile, but also presents new opportunities for transit-oriented development and commercial investment.

As the service continues to draw more passengers than expected, real estate opportunities near station areas are poised to grow. Developers and investors are likely to see increased demand for commercial, hospitality, and residential projects. The planned infrastructure improvements are expected to make the rail service more reliable, further enhancing its appeal to both commuters and tourists.

The collaborative effort between Amtrak, state governments, and host railroads reflects a strategic approach to modernize the regional transportation offering. With upcoming upgrades, the local economy could benefit from shorter travel times and enhanced connectivity, making surrounding areas more attractive to both business and leisure travelers.
