Maryland-based Baywood Hotels has announced that the 14-story office building at 1100 Tulane Ave. will become a Canopy by Hilton Hotel.

Baywood purchased the building for $7 million on Dec. 11, 2014 from Renaissance Neighborhood Development Corp., an affiliate of Volunteers of America. RNDC had purchased the building in 2013 for $2.3 million with plans to convert it into mixed-income housing.  Baywood plans to convert the building into a 182 key hotel.

Hilton’s Canopy brand is focused on a younger generation of traveler.  Construction started in June with interior demolition by Roy Anderson Corp.

The building has been vacant since 2003.
