The Historic New Orleans Collection (HNOC) has initiated the public phase of a $35 million capital campaign to revamp its 533 Royal Street campus. This ambitious project aims to restore seven historic buildings and five courtyards, expand public gallery space, and enhance exhibition capacity with a target public opening in 2029.

This announcement marks the start of HNOC’s “Restore, Renew, Reimagine” campaign, with the public-phase launch revealed on November 2, 2026. Leading the construction efforts is Ryan Gootee General Contractors, while Trapolin‑Peer and Hartman‑Cox are on board as project architects. Metcalfe Architecture & Design will handle exhibition design work. To date, the campaign has secured $30 million, including over $11 million from philanthropic private donations.

Located in the French Quarter, the project will transform previously unused spaces into new galleries, interactive displays, educational areas, and an historic house museum. This development intends to draw more than 300,000 visitors annually once completed. For now, HNOC still needs to raise the remaining $5 million to hit its overall funding goal.

The project carries significant implications for local real estate and development professionals, providing opportunities related to construction, design, and nearby business improvements. The forthcoming renovations are set to influence foot traffic and cultural offerings in an area densely populated with tourism and retail activities, potentially benefiting local hotels, shops, and restaurants.

As HNOC advances this major undertaking, the focus remains on public-phase fundraising and publicizing the campaign. Construction will follow a multi-year schedule, projecting a 2029 completion and opening of the remodeled campus. Community and neighborhood impacts, as well as further preservation efforts, are expected to play a significant role as the development progresses.
