Is There A New “Trade District” & MGM Grand Hotel Coming to the Riverfront?

Earlier this year, the Convention Center issued a “request for interest” from developers for the redevelopment of 47 acres of unused land on the River owned by the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center into a massive mixed-use district that would featured shopping, hotel, residential, and entertainment.

A group of developers vying to become Master Developer for the project have proposed the Trade District, a new riverfront neighborhood with an MGM Grand hotel, 1,400 residences, hudnreds of thousands of square feet of retail and restaurants, and amazing views of the river.

Partners on the project are real estate barons , owner of the Outlet Collection at the Riverwalk.

The Convention Center plans to invest up to $175 million for infrastructure improvements with the hopes of facilitating $1 billion in private investment.

Other features of the Trade District include:

  • A “headquarters hotel campus” with conference spaces, restaurants, a spa, nightclubs and performance venues. MGM Hakkasan Hospitality has been brought on as the operator.

  • The Trade House is envisioned as a “culinary emporium” public market, much like the recently opened St. Roch Market.

  • Another 250,000 square foot building will be dedicated to restaurants and retail.

  • A “cultural campus” for museums and educational facilities.

  • 1,427 residential units: 29 townhouses, 979 apartments, 359 condos and 60 “MGM Skyloft” units at the top of the hotel.

  • Public green space running through the development and a “landmark” tower.
