The Jung Hotel, once the largest and grandest hotel in the Southern United States, is undergoing a massive transformational redevelopment. You can check out the plans here.

Joe Jaeger is the developer and The Mcdonnel Group is the contractor.  Both John Williams Arhcitects and Trahan Architects have worked on the project.

A complete historic restoration will preserve this 108-year-old downtown New Orleans landmark building. The 550,000 SF 17-story building, located on the iconic Canal Street, will be rehabilitated and repurposed to include multi-family apartments, hotel rooms, retail, and commercial spaces. In addition, the plans call for restaurants, meeting space, fitness center, and spa.

A new 7-story parking garage will also be constructed. The project calls for replacing the entire mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. The developers will finance through Federal & State Historic District Tax Credits.

Construction is underway, with an estimated completion date later in 2016.

The Jung Hotel first opened its doors in 1907.  In 1925, another section was added and, in the 1960’s, still another.  At one time, it was labeled as the largest convention hotel in the South.  It was called the Jung for more than 75 years and, afterward, it was known as the Clarion, Raddison and Park Plaza.  It was heavily damaged in the great federal flood of 2005.

My paternal family came through New Orleans in 1840. My family started The Jung Hotel. I was always told about a hotel we had on Canal Street and then it was sold. My son’s father attended school at Tulane and his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, would have their formal at the “Jung”, because it was the nicest I town.

My maiden name is Jung and I would relish being a part of such a magnificent restoration. In fact, I will be so bold to say frankly you’d be crazy not to allow me, a passionate, history-minded, New Orleans-loving Deep South Lady to get to be apart of this. I could be your dream come true for this amazing plan you and I are all looking to execute for the sake of our beloved city, New Orleans.

Please be in touch with me as you see fit. And I have family letters and articles that would be accessible to you after renovation.

      Hi Ann-Marie,

I’m doing some work for the relaunch of The Jung and I came across your comment. I wonder if there might be a way to speak to you? I’m particularly interested in the history of the establishment.

If you’re game, I’d love to be in touch via email. Where can I reach you?

      All the best,

      Jeremy
