The Lafitte Greenway, a 2.6-mile multi-use trail, bike path, and linear park connecting the French Quarter to Bayou St. John and Mid City, finally broke ground yesterday after years of drawn out planning and negotiations.

Last month, the Friends of Lafitte Corridor announced that they had selected a contractor for the $9.1 million first phase.

Plans call for a new walking and bike path, 500 new trees, park areas, and upgrades to shrubbery, lighting.
