A few months back the news broke that the three buildings at the corner of Magazine and Nashville (5727 Magazine Street) were to be reconfigured into a higher end retail development by developer Butler Callahan Holdings.

At the time, the developer told neighbors that plans called for the new building entrances and larger windows to enliven the street frontages and compliment the thriving, pedestrian-friendly Magazine commercial corridor.  The new plans were intended to “reinforce the small-scale nature of Uptown New Orleans neighborhood shopping culture.”

The developer bought the property at the end of the 5700 block of Magazine where Rare Cuts, Vom Fass and Parcels and Post are currently located.   We now know that Vom Fass is moving to Gertler’s Gallier Court development in the CBD and Rare Cuts has signed a new lease at 5920 Magazine Street.

Now, we finally have the proposed development plans.

The design calls for structural renovations and additions to the three existing commercial one story wood frame structures  into a single commercial structure with white box spaces ready for tenant buildout.

A new corner building addition to the existing corner building is to the replace corner parking lot and match the street frontage of the second two buildings through ‘bridge’ additions with glass storefronts and clerestories, which will also connect the three buildings.

The existing shed additions to the existing primary structures will be demolished. The existing buildings are to be shored and leveled to a common floor height. The existing porches will be demo’d and replaced with a continuous porch at buildings B and C with new stairs and planters. The existing gravel lot at the rear yard will be replaced with a concrete parking lot with a dumpster enclosure. Existing sidewalks are to be replaced. New hardscape paving, concrete walks and site lighting are to be provided per plans.
