Tulane University has started construction on its brand new three-story, $55 million multipurpose facility, the Commons building, which will open in 2019.

Commons will house a new dining hall, multipurpose meeting spaces and a permanent home for the Newcomb College Institute.  The building is located across from the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library and will be connected to the west end of the Lavin-Bernick Center with a second-floor walkway.

Two floors of the 77,000 square foot facility will have multiple dining options and 1,100 seats for eating, studying and conversation. The third floor of Commons will feature an open-air courtyard, an area for archives and special collections, a library with a reading room, an event space and offices for the Newcomb Alumnae Association.

Tulane will demolish its Bruff Commons Dining Room when the Commons opens next year.
