After shooting down the conceptual plan for a 96 room Moxy Hotel at 744St Charles Avenue last November, the Historic District Landmarks Commission finally granted its approval for the proposed development.
Developers Barry and Lorraine Dinvaut plan to build a five-story addition to a historic commercial building at 744 St. Charles Ave, which used to be an office supply store 60 years ago.
Along with the approval, the HDLC is requiring the developers to work with the neighborhood groups within the Lafayette Square historic district on several design issues, including a better setback from the street.
This approval has been a long time coming for the developers, who have been working for years to overcome neighborhood opposition to height and massing of the upper floors. The developers has even originally proposed an eight-story building with a hotel, luxury condos, and retail/restaurant (Check out the plans).
The Dinvaut’s bought the building for $2,000,000 in 2013, and are working with Lenny Wormser of NAI/Latter & Blum to develop the building. Campo Architects are the architects and designers for the project.
