The Sazerac House, a 3-story museum in a historic building at 500 Canal Street, opened its doors last week. The Sazerac Company purchased the vacant buildings in 2016 and broke ground in early 2017.

The 48,000-square-foot museum tells the story of the history of the Sazerac cocktail as well as other original New Orleans brands. The museum houses a bar, the Sazerac Company offices with more than 60 employees, and a retail shop.

Visitors can assist with the production of Peychaud’s Bitters and Sazerac Rye Whiskey, and participate in a variety of other interactive exhibits, including sampling stations throughout.

The buildings are nearly 200 years old and have been vacant for more than 30 years. Starwood and MetLife, the former owners, were criticized over the years for letting the property sit their vacant.

Trapolin-Peer Architects and Ryan Gootee General Contractors lead the renovation work. Gallagher & Associates designed the exhibits and Solomon Group fabricated and installed the exhibits.

The Sazerac Company projects 200,000 visitors during the museum’s first year open.
