A new 176-key Canopy by Hilton is set to open in early 2022 in the former Oil & Gas building at 1100 Tulane Avenue.

Maryland-based Baywood Hotels purchased the vacant14-story former office building in 2014 for $7 million and partnered with Dallas-based NewcrestImage on the conversion. The team announced the Canopy by Hilton flag in 2015 and broke ground in 2020.

The hotel will feature a new Cajun/Cantonese restaurant named Ginger Roux, lead by chef Jonathan Hostetler.

The building was vacant since 2003. It originally got its name from the Monterey Oil Co., which leased a large portion of the building when it opened. A ground floor night club known as Ampersand was the last tenant, which closed in 2014. The building was deemed historic in recent years, which allowed historic tax credits to help finance its renovation.
