Owners of the largest undeveloped land on Veterans Blvd. moved closer to reality Wednesday as Jefferson Parish approved two ordinances to change the zoning in accordance with an agreement with neighbors back in February.

The agreement called for five lots on the north and east side of the property to be zoned R-1A, which allows for single family residential homes.   This would act to buffer the existing homes from future commercial development near Vets.

The rest of the property that faces Veterans Boulevard will be zoned as C-1, which allows for commercial uses.

The first ordinance passed by the council  was to sell a portion of Tolmas Drive to Morning Park LLC, which owns the land between Ridgelake Drive and North Labarre Road, and the second was to change the land’s zoning from residential to commercial.

Morning Park has been trying develop commercial businesses there since buying the property in 2004.  Against the residential zoning, the company cited a 1963 court injunction that then-owner Oscar Tolmas obtained to let him operate an office.

Hopefully this will pave the way for something productive to be done at the site.
