Children’s Hospital will embark on a new $225 million expansion this week, expanding the current campus to an adjacent 17-acre site it purchased in 2014.

The medical complex includes brand new construction and the renovation of historic buildings at the site of the old New Orleans Adolescent Hospital campus, which is directly adjacent to the current hospital. Children’s purchased the site for $29 million in 2014.

The first phase includes renovating historic structures, demolishing six others, building an 800-car parking garage and a new 267,000 square-foot critical-care building.  The expansion will create a new cancer center with inpatient and outpatient services, new critical care facilities, the new parking garage and an elevated walkway across Henry Clay Avenue to connect the two campuses.   Included in the $225 million expansion are:

– new emergency and inpatient radiology departments;

– a same-day surgery unit with private rooms;

– a cardiac intensive care and neonatal intensive care unit with private rooms;

– a cancer center of excellence;

– a second-floor connecting walkway over Henry Clay Avenue; and

– new main entrance, reception and lobby areas.

In November, the hospital announced a partnership with Hogs for the Cause to build a new facility for temporary housing for patients and families.  Hogs for the Cause is donating $2 million for that project, which is also being built at the new campus.  The facility will feature 14 family suites with private bathrooms, flatscreen televisions, Wifi, and mini refrigerators.

The first phase of construction will take 1.5 years, with the rest filling in over the following timeline. Children’s Hospital will hold an official ground breaking Wednesday (Jan.11).  Eskew+Dumez+Ripple is the architect.

Children’s Hospital currently has 247 beds and treated  more than 66,400 children in 2015.  Children’s is owned and operated by LCMC Health, which has been making big moves lately.  In addition to Children’s Hospital, LCMC Health currently operates Touro Infirmary, the New Orleans East Hospital, the brand new University Medical Center and West Jefferson Medical Center. They also recently announced plans to develop a network of 7 urgent care centers across New Orleans.
