VCAY New Orleans has successfully converted the former Archdiocese office tower located at 1000 Howard Ave. into a boutique suite hotel, marking a $40 million private-sector investment in downtown New Orleans. This adaptive reuse project, finalized in mid-August, brings new hospitality options to the area.

The development transformed the 12-story midcentury office building into a hotel featuring 39 multi-bedroom suites, totaling 179 bedrooms. VCAY’s strategy leveraged historic tax credits to preserve key architectural elements while introducing modern accommodations.

Originally acquired in 2022 for approximately $8.3 million, the project significantly exceeded initial renovation estimates of $22 million. VCAY’s conversion created numerous construction jobs and has established around 15 permanent positions for ongoing operations.

The hotel, designed by AQ Studios under the direction of architect Philip Goldberg, maintains the building’s historical integrity. Sam Mohd, managing partner of VCAY, led the transformation, contributing to downtown’s growing commercial appeal.

This redevelopment is significant not only for its scale but also for its impact on the local hospitality landscape, offering an innovative lodging model that blends short-term rental design with traditional hotel amenities.
