We all know that Hurricane Katrina left thousands of empty lots across the city. Most of us know that many of those lots are blighted and filled with overgrown weeds. And some of us know that there have been efforts to create urban gardens on those lots. But 200 of them? Really?
The Times-Picayune reports over 200 gardens or “land based projects” are being actively worked on throughout the city. These include orchards, traditional gardens, pocket parks, and food gardens. In fact, LivingLotsNOLA.org has a great list of urban gardens you should check out.
The site has maps with projects and also provides leases and instructions on how to get your own urban garden, including working with Habitat for Humanity and the NORA Alternative Land Use Program.
Another site, NOFFN has a “FarmCity Toolbox”, with information about land use, training and lots of “how to” basics to setting up your first farm.
We want to know, do you want to start your own urban garden on a vacant lot?
